Important Reasons to Learn Spanish!

1. Spanish is the third most widely spoken language in the world! In about 25 countries, Spanish is the first language! Travel is lots more fun, if you speak the language of the people who live there!

2. Spanish and English share many words in common - most are of Latin origin. Plus, it is easier to learn other romance languages (those derived from Latin or "roman") such as Italian, Portuguese, and French!

3. Learning a second language makes one a better student! The more conections you feed your brain, the smarter you will be! AND - it is proven that students who learn a foreign language excel in college entrance exams!

4. To learn another language opens our hearts and minds to other peoples and their cultures - "to know another's language is to begin to know his heart . . ."!

5. It is FUN!

LITERATURE and HISTORY: Week of March 21-25

Happy Sunday to all you rested 5th and 6th graders!

I hope you're ready to come back tomorrow--I've enjoyed our time off, but I'm ready to see you all again!

This week will be a little unusual because of the Stanford Test that will be given on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings this week. This test is nothing to be worried about--in fact, I want you to look forward to it, because it will show you just how much you've learned since you were tested last year! Be sure and get a good night's sleep every night, and eat something with protein for breakfast--cheese toast, or an egg: Brain Food!

I have some surprises in store that are even cooler than "going on a Scavenger Hunt. . . in a book!" We'll have a fun week. There will be no spelling words or spelling test this week. You will have some chapters to read in Johnny Tremain this week, but I will be giving you class time or after-you're-done-with-the-test-time to read, so you shouldn't have any homework once the Stanford begins on Wednesday. You'll still be filling out 2 of your 3 charts when you read.

In history, we'll be making a layered book/timeline about the causes of the Revolutionary War and watching Liberty!--a fabulous mini-series about the war that was shown on PBS several years ago.

Enjoy your last evening (and cheer for the Lady Bears who play in their first game of the NCAA championship tonight at 6:30 on ESPN! Sic 'Em Bears!)

Love, Mrs. H

Hello, Students,

I am posting this early since I will be gone from Sunday through Wednesday of next week. I know you'll have a great time with Mrs. Castleberry!

Next week, you will be exploring the historical novel, Johnny Tremain. Each night you will need to read the chapter you have been assigned for homework. You will also be keeping three separate lists:

· A graphic organizer about Johnny’s character traits (Johnny’s head)

· A list of any historical fact you come across in your reading: dates, place names, events that Johnny may be involved in that you think REALLY happened, such as a meeting of the Sons of Liberty where Samuel Adams speaks, etc.

· A description written by the author that you find especially graphic and full of imagery.

Your HOMEWORK for next week is:

For MONDAY, MARCH 7: You will be given your books on Friday with this handout and the charts mentioned above. Read Chapter 1 (it is divided into 6 very small sections, pages 1-30.
