LITERATURE and HISTORY for Week of May 9-13

I have good news! Our last spelling and vocabulary test for the year will be next Monday, May 16! These words will be from our study of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and are found below. There will be no more reading logs due this year.

As we get closer to the end of the year, I want to remind you to be vigilant in getting your work done and keeping your grades up. You will have one more book to read, which I will assign next week--it is short, and is told from the point of view of the dog that accompanied Lewis and Clark as they explored the Louisiana Purchase for President Thomas Jefferson! You will love it.

You will be getting a study guide this week for a test over the Constitutional Convention, the contents of the Constitution, and some of the most important amendments, called the Bill of Rights. I'm planning the test for next week--I'll be more specific after I see how long it takes us to go over this information.

Here are your spelling words for the test on Monday, May 16:

1. legislative--the branch of our government that makes the laws

2. executive--the branch of our government that enforces the laws

3. judicial--the branch of our government that judges the constitutionality of our laws

4. Congress--the two houses of our legislative branch

5. House of Representatives--the house of the Congress whose members are elected from the states based on the population of that state.

6. Senate--the house of the Congress whose members are elected from the states, 2 per state.

7. amendment--the way that changes are made to the constitution

8. individual--person by person

9. federalism--the belief held by the Founding Fathers that there should be a central or national government as well as state governments

10. democracy--rule directly by the people, taken from the democracy of Ancient Greece

11. republic--the form of government found in Ancient Rome which allowed for representatives to be appointed and sent to rule on behalf of the people

LITERATURE and HISTORY: Week of May 2-6

Hello, 5th and 6th Graders,

This week, we will be reading Shh! We're Writing the Constitution during class--actually, we'll be listening to it aloud, and you will be learning to take notes while you listen.

You'll be learning about the difficulties the Founding Fathers had writing the Constitution and the many issues that came up for debate during the Constitutional Convention.

You'll also be memorizing the Preamble to the Constitution, which you will have to recite on Monday, May 9. You will find it below, and I will also be giving you a hard copy in class. Your spelling words this week come from the history that you will be studying.

See you tomorrow,

Mrs. H
