LITERATURE: March 26-30

This week, we will continue reading The Light in the Forest. Can you imagine how difficult it must have been for True Son to learn to live like his family of origin? Don’t you feel sad for his family, who has missed him so much all of these years only to be faced with a child they have never known? These terrible dilemmas happened in real life to many colonial children who had survived being kidnapped by Indians, later to be returned to their colonial families. They were out of place in both worlds. Does anything like this happen in the world today?

Your reading assignments are below. Our goal is to finish reading The Light in the Forest by next Thursday just before our Easter weekend break. Your spelling and vocabulary words are below. Your test will be on Monday, April 2.

Week of March 19-23 Literature and History

Hi, Students!

I hope you're having a happy and fun spring break. I wanted to get this information on the blog while I was planning. Be sure and look it over--especially next week!

Shades of the prison-house begin to close

Upon the growing Boy,

But he beholds the light, and whence it flows,

He sees it in his joy.

The stanza from the poem above was written by William Wordsworth, a great poet of the 1800s. What do you think it is talking about? What do you think the boy see that makes him joyful? This stanza is used at the beginning of the novel we will start in class on Monday, The Light in the Forest, by Conrad Richter.

We will be immersed in the colonies of Pennsylvania and Delaware, and be reading about the relationships among the British soldiers, the American colonists, and the Native Americans of the region--and one boy who finds himself confused about all three groups of people.

This week, all of our reading will be done at school since you have your Stanford tests. HOWEVER, if you do not finish your reading at school, you must finish it at home (Chapters 4 & 5). You will be keeping a chart as you read, and must be able to participate in our discussions next week in class. Your spelling and vocabulary words will be taken from this novel. They are below. You must be able to spell the words correctly, and recognize the correct definitions for the words. Your test over these words will be Tuesday, March 27.

MONDAY, March 19: We will read Chapter 1 (i=pp. 3-8) in class aloud, and fill in Chapter 1 on our chart. HOMEWORK: Read Chapter 2 (ii=pp. 9-16)—fill out chart and be ready to discuss on Tuesday.

TUESDAY, March 20: We will have questions over Chapters 1 and 2, and read Chapter 3 during class, filling out our chart together. No Homework.

WEDNESDAY, March 21 and THURSDAY, March 22: Read Chapter 4 (iv=pp. 25-35) after Stanford test and fill out chapter chart.

FRIDAY, March 22: Read Chapter 5 (v=pp. 36-43) after Stanford test and fill out chapter chart.

SPELLING WORDS for Test on Tuesday, March 26. You will need to be able to match the word with its definition.

1. aversion = a strong dislike for something or someone

2. palaver = flattering speech

3. doughty = strong and brave

4. spunky = courageous

5. frontier = unexplored territory

6. excitation = being in an excited state

7. grimace = a facial expression of dislike or pain

8. acknowledge = to recognize

9. soberly = with seriousness

10. cumbersome = burdensome and clumsy

TYING UP LOOSE ENDS

Hi, Students! I hope you've been able to enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend by getting lots of fresh air and sunshine!

This is our last week of school before our Spring Break. This Friday, March 9, is an early out day for all of you, though there will be Extended Care for those of you who stay later. Just be sure and bring your sack lunch if you're staying, because we won't have lunch at school that day.

I also want to encourage you to "Bee Generous" to someone over the holiday week, and come back with your story to write down on your Bee note. If you need extra cards, Ms. Jeter has them in the office.

There isn't too much homework this week, but there are lots of things to tie together. I don't know about you, but in my mind, there are all these 17th century boats just milling around the Atlantic, and I'm not sure which ones landed at Roanoke, Jamestown, or Plymouth. We also have to fit some Texas history in this week, so we'll be working on sorting things out.

We will also have our "performance" of our script from The Witch of Blackbird Pond on Thursday, March 8 at 9:15 in the Library. Please let your parents know so that they might be able to come and watch you. If you have a costume item (hat, shawl, cape) from home that might help differentiate you from the other characters, please bring it.

You have no new spelling words for this week, though you do have a test tomorrow over last week's words. There is one definition you need to be able to write by memory.

Your only homework will be on Monday night--you will have to read Chapters 13 and 14 in your History textbook, and fill out a picture chart like you did for Jamestown. These chapters are about Plymouth.

You will also have a unit test on Thursday, March 8, over the three British colonies of Roanoke, Jamestown, and Plymouth, and will be comparing the British colonies with what you already know about the Spanish and French colonies in the New World.

Lastly, you will have a short research project in History class where you each take one of the main colonial powers and find out what they had to do with the settlement of Texas. You will present that information on Friday.

Take a big breath, eat your Wheaties, and let's "git 'er done!"

See you tomorrow,

Mrs. Horner
