LITERATURE and HISTORY: Week of April 26-29

I'm really sorry to be posting this so late in the weekend, and so late at night. But there is not much to post this week.

You'll be grieved to know that you have no new spelling words--but last week's words will be tested tomorrow, Tuesday. There is also no novel to read yet--we'll have a new one next week, so there are no reading assignments.

You still need to read at least 30 minutes every day in a book of your choice. If you didn't get your reading log turned into me last week on the Thursday that we went to Homestead Heritage, bring it as soon as possible.

You will have a history test over the Revolutionary War this Friday, but we'll be studying for that in class. We will also be doing a short unit on the Music of the Revolutionary War, so if you want to bring your guitars, do so this Thursday.

I hope you had a wonderful and blessed Easter and I'll see you tomorrow!

LITERATURE and SPELLING: Week of April 11-15

Hello, Fellow-Americans!

You will be continuing to work on your PowerPoint biographies of your Revolutionary "bigwig" this next week. You should have finished reading and taking notes on your full-length biography, and will need to get approval on those before you can begin your PPt this week. You won't have to do any reading for class except to take notes from at least two more sources for your PPt.

Your PPt will be due Friday, April 15. You will be making your presentations on Monday and Tuesday, April 18 and 19. Your READING LOGS are also due every Friday--some of you have been forgetting since the new 9 weeks began. And you will have a spelling and vocabulary test on Friday. You will need to spell the word correctly and match the definitions to the words.

If you can come to class by next Friday and be able to write an explanation of where the term "bigwig" originated, you'll get extra credit on your spelling test. I will not accept anything printed out from the internet. You'll also get extra credit for finding out who is with GW in the picture on this blog, where they are, and what the French word for "war" is.

Annual Fund Participation Drive

Achieving excellence requires commitment from everyone. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of educating our students and maintaining our first-rate faculty. Donations provide the essential funds needed for curriculum development, faculty, scholarships and operating costs.

Starting Wednesday, April 6, we will launch our Annual Fund Participation Drive at the classroom level. Our goal is 100%!! The classroom with the highest percentage of Annual Fund contributors will win a great afternoon out: a special lunch out followed by fun afternoon activities. The lunch has been generously donated by this year’s Annual Fund Chairs Lori and David Butler. The contest is only for the number of contributors, not the amount contributed. Previous contributions to this year's Annual Fund will count towards your class; however, only donations specified for the Annual Fund will count. The contest will conclude Friday, April 29.

Every gift no matter the size helps. Your tax-deductible contribution will make a significant difference to CCS students immediately and in years to come.

We can accept donations online via PayPal using a credit card. You can find a link to our PayPal account via Facebook and our school website.

LITERATURE & HISTORY: Homework & Spelling 4/4-4/8

Hello!
I hope you've had a good weekend! This week, our history and literature are so intertwined, I thought I would give you a summary for both on the same blog post. The picture above is of Carpenter Hall in Philadelphia, PA where the first meeting of the Continental Congress took place!

YOU SHOULD COME TO CLASS tomorrow with all of your essays on Johnny Tremain ready to turn in!

In History, you have until Thursday, April 7 to turn in your layered timeline books on The Causes of the Revolutionary War.

And in literature, you should have begun the reading schedule that YOU made on Friday so that you finish your biography of your colonial leader by this Friday, April 8. You have your research packet on that project (given to you on Friday last week), so I won't write it all here. But you should be reading and taking notes in an organized way. On Monday, during computer lab, you will be finding primary source documents about your colonial leader to use in the PowerPoint that you will eventually make. The PPt is due on Friday, April 15--you will make your presentations on April 18 and 19 the next week.

SPELLING WORDS for test on Friday, April 8

2. militia--a citizen army
3. ragamuffin--someone dressed in rags

Latin Bee!

The date has been set for the Second Annual CCS Latin Bee!

Since there are now two sections of Latin we will host two separate events on the same day. The Latin Bee is scheduled for Thursday, May 19.

Latin I will begin at 9 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Latin I students all have a list of words to begin studying.

Latin II students will be begin at 10 a.m. also in the Parish Hall. Vocabulary words for these students have been handed out as well. This will be a very challenging competition because of the more advanced words we have studied this year in Latin II.

This was such a fun competition last year, going several rounds into the tie-breaker phase. I really look forward to the Latin Bee this year! I'm so proud of all my students.
