LIT & HISTORY January 28-February 1, 2013

Hello, Students!

This week, we begin a new novel and one of my favorites since I first read it back in the day:  The Witch of Blackbird Pond.  It will usher us into the Thirteen Colonies of the British.  It is a great study in character development, so each of you will be choosing (at random) one of the main characters from the novel to follow throughout your reading.  You will also be creating a Colonial-style doll that will look like and be dressed like your character.  I will be teaching you to sew with a needle and thread, and with a sewing machine, so this will be a fun and exciting unit--even for you, boys!  Just think, you'll always be able to sew on your own buttons from now on!

This week, you will have homework again--the reading and journals  that you aren't able to finish in class will be done each night at home.  You will have a quiz every 4 chapters of the book, and in between, will be asked to respond in writing to one of the book's quotations.  So read carefully!

Your reading logs will be due this Friday, as usual, and you may count your class time reading so long as you are all quietly reading during class.  If  you can't get your reading done at school, you can't count that time.  You can count any reading on The Witch of Blackbird Pond that you read at home on your reading log.

Also due on Friday, February 1, is your permission slip for the Rodeo at the Bell County Expo (the trip is on Wednesday, February 6.)  We do need parent volunteers to drive and chaperone, and you will be bringing a sack lunch that day to eat while on the field trip.

This Friday is the 100th day of school!  We're over the half-way point.  If you know for certain whether you will be attending CCS in the fall or not, please let us know.  It is important for us to know how many of you will be returning so that teachers can be hired and curriculum planned and ordered.  Thank you!

Below are links to your work this week, and your spelling and vocabulary list is below.
See you tomorrow!

Your dads will be in for a treat on Friday (besides donuts and breakfast tacos!)  You will be presenting original plays based on an Inca legend that you will read in class on Tuesday.

You can access this week's schedule here with assignments and due dates.

10.  predicate nominative:  a noun or pronoun in the complete predicate that renames the subject.  A teacher should be a person of character.

Researching Your Mayan Artifact

RESEARCHING YOUR MAYAN ARTIFACT

Your job today is to find an artifact like the one you sketched when we were at the Mayborn  in Waco last September, and write about it on a notecard.  Bend the notecard into a tent, then write on the blank side.  This will sit next to your artifact when you display it.

The information you want to include is:

WHAT YOUR PIECE IS (Bowl, Censor, Dish, etc.)
WHO CREATED IT (Maya)
APPROXIMATE DATE WHEN IT WAS MADE

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY

There are 7 pages of Mayan artifacts at this website!

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA

This is an amazing site with 10 pages of just Mayan artifacts!

If you don't find any pottery like yours after looking at these two websites for several minutes, go to the
Google Images website and type in "Ancient Mayan Pottery."  It will bring up many pictures.  If you see one that looks like yours, click on it, and it will bring up a bigger version.  Behind that bigger picture will be some writing that will tell about that piece.

HISTORY & LIT for January 7-11, 2013

Hello, Students!

Please read the previous blog post for the New Year and notice the three changes:

            1.  I will no longer micro-grade your handwriting, but if I can’t read an answer,  it will be counted wrong.
            2.  There will be no such thing as bringing a paper in late (unless you are sick.)  If you don’t turn in an assignment on time, you will do it THAT DAY instead of going to PE/Music or both.
            3.  We will continue to schedule our day with Large Group Instruction, followed by your own Individual Time.  Get your work done at school so that you don’t have homework!

This week’s schedule can be found by clicking on this link.  Unfortunately, it is really difficult to transfer a Word document with the charts to a blog post.  So, it is available to you on Box.Net.  You will also get a hard copy of this at school.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! CHANGES. . .

Happy New Year, Students and Parents!

I pray that you have had a fun and restful break, and are excited about coming back to school!  I love January--it's so calm and focused, after all the excitement of the holidays.  We have some great history units and novels to read this semester!

I would like to tell you first about a couple of changes.  I will not be micro-grading your handwriting any more.  You each have mastered cursive writing, and understand how the letters are to be made.  You will still get a handwriting grade, and it will still be an E,S,N, or U.  But it will be based on how legible your writing is on your papers, including spelling tests.  If one of your letters looks like another letter (an "e" looks like an "l," or an "r" looks like a "u") I will count the word wrong.  So be prepared to use what you have learned as you develop your own cursive handwriting style.

The next change I will implement deals with late work.  If you do not turn in a paper ON TIME, you need to be prepared to stay in from music and/or PE the day the assignment is due!  As per school policy, you will have extra time to get worked turned in if you are home sick, or have a family emergency that keeps you from being at school.  But remember that in this age of technology, you can always access papers and assignments here on the blog by linking to Box.Net where I have them posted.  If you are too sick to read or work on school work, you will get extra time.  But if you are waiting for your fever to be gone or your antibiotics to kick in, you can probably manage to stay caught up while you are home.

Finally, I think we all agreed that you liked the way you were able to work ahead, using the weekly assignment charts each week.  So, I will continue to give you your assignments and papers for the week on Monday.  We will have some Large Group Instruction Time each day, and you will have your Individual Time to work at school so that you don't have homework.

Look tomorrow for another post from me that will have our week's work!  Enjoy your weekend and this beautiful sunshine!

Mrs. Horner

Bible: Jan 7-11 2013

Happy New Year Everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful break!

Memory Verse:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:1-5

Monday: We will go back and review our previous lessons over the Baptism of Jesus and refresh our minds on what we have already learned. We will then read different Gospel passages and see how God gave people revelations that Jesus was his beloved Son. We will then create a mobile from these Gospel narratives. Make sure you bring your art supplies for Monday's class.

Wednesday: Eucharist Chapel - Ephipany "Wise Men"

Friday: We will use our materials on the Baptism of Jesus and prepare for a test on Monday the 14th. Have your prayer journals with you and be prepared to take them home to study!
