Hi, young'uns,

Sorry to be getting this posted so late on Sunday night. ( No, I'm not watching the Academy Awards, but I did get involved in the Lady Bears basketball game this afternoon, and that put me behind.) They won. . . by only 1 point!

Tomorrow, we will finish discussing Amos Fortune. Our next novel is a classic, Johnny Tremain, which we will begin on Friday. In between, we're going to read some chapters in the new volume of our history book, From Colonies to Country and do some work with grammar! I think I can hear you all cheering all the way out here in Belton!

Below are your assignments for the week, and your spelling words for the test on Friday, March 4. This 9 weeks ends in two weeks, just before Spring Break, so be sure and get all your work caught up and your reading logs turned in. You can count the reading you do at school for your 30 minutes--just be sure and write it down and turn it in!

MONDAY: Be ready to discuss the last two chapters of Amos Fortune. HOMEWORK: Read the poem at the beginning of Volume 3 of A History of US. and analyze the poem based on the questions on a handout that will be given to you. Then, go to page 8 of the book, and analyze the three quotes by Thomas Jefferson on that same handout

Greetings, students! I hope you're having a nice weekend, and getting some sunshine and fresh air! Remember to bring your Valentines tomorrow for our party!

This week in literature, we will be presenting our book reports on our colonial books. I can't wait to hear your scripts, see your finished costume and set designs, and hear about your book! You have been doing such a creative job on the pieces of your projects that it will be great to see these all come together for your whole presentation. We will have two students presenting per day, tomorrow through Wednesday.

Our next book continues in the colonial period, but will be from the point of view of a native captured from West Africa and brought over to New England to be sold as a slave. The book is entitled, Amos Fortune and is a true story. You will get your copy on Wednesday during class. Your homework will be to read Chapters 1 and 2 by the following day, Thursday; and to read Chapters 3 and 4 by Tuesday of next week, February 22. Your spelling words this week will be taken from this book.

Tomorrow, we will take last Friday's spelling test, so study those words from last week one more time.

HOMEWORK:

For Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday--make sure your book report project is completed. We will take volunteers to present tomorrow, but draw for who will report on Tuesday and Wednesday.

For Thursday, read Chapters 1 and 2 of Amos Fortune (you will receive your book on Wednesday)

For Tuesday, February 22, read Chapters 3 and 4 of Amos Fortune.

LITERATURE & HISTORY: Week of February 7-11

Well, it's half-time at the Super Bowl and I thought I'd take this opportunity to post for the week. I hope you've had a nice, long weekend and were able to build something fun out of the snow!

This week, you will continue working on your book reports on the "colonial" story each of you chose. You should be finished reading the whole book by tomorrow, and you will do one last summary of the falling action, ending, any character changes, and solution of the conflict that the protagonist has been in throughout your book.

I just finished reading A Country of Strangers by Conrad Richter, and it is really sad--True Son does come into the story toward the end to help the main character, a girl who is no longer accepted by the Indians or by the whites. It is a great book, and I would recommend it to any of you who want to see the story of the Lenni Lenape continue. I wish there were other books to follow.

Your book report set and costume designs are due a week from tomorrow, on Valentine's Day. Your scripts of either a monologue or dialogue are due on Friday, February 18. However, if possible, could you have those done by Monday, the 14th too? I know that two of you are basically done with everything. You're going to get to write the next play for Chapel while the others finish working on their book reports.

Tomorrow, Monday, be ready to turn in your reading logs from Friday and take last week's spelling test. There is another spelling test this Friday, February 11, but it is short and requires no vocabulary.

In history, you will each be researching one of the Middle Colonies, adding those to your maps, and filling in charts about those 4 colonies. I'm going to ask you, Skylar, to read about and report on Benjamin Franklin of the Pennsylvania Colony.

Below, please find your spelling words. I'll see you tomorrow!

SPELLING for Test on Friday, February 11 (these are random words from a 6th grade list)

1. assignment
2. strategy
3. concentration
4. exercise
5. system
6. consonant
7. dissonant
8. suggestion
