LITERATURE: Homework, December 6-17

This is a house in Wethersfield, Connecticut that was built in the late 1600s

We are now well into the novel, The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. And we’re about to find out that in this case, sadly, fiction is not far from the truth when it came to witch hunts in the early colonies.

Below are your assignments and spelling words for the next two weeks.

For MONDAY, December 6: You should have read Chapters 3 and 4 in The Witch of Blackbird Pond and have written two more entries in your Reader’s Journal. After our discussion on Monday, you will have a quiz over the first 4 chapters of this book. I will also take up your Reader’s Journals to read your entries. HOMEWORK: Read Chapters 5 and 6 in WOBBP; write in Reader’s Journal; Spelling—write your spelling words three times each in Modern Manuscript—due on Tuesday.

TUESDAY, December 7: Discuss Chapters 5 and 6; Share Reader’s Journals. HOMEWORK: For Wednesday, read Chapters 7 and 8 in WOBBP; write in Reader’s Journals; Review Chapters 5-8 for Quiz tomorrow. Spelling—write your spelling words as the shapes of the letters of the name of your favorite character in WOBBP—due Thursday.

WEDNESDAY, December 8: Discuss Chapters 7 and 8; Quiz over Chapters 5-8. Turn in Reader’s Journals to be checked. HOMEWORK: For Thursday, read Chapter 9 and write in Reader’s Journal. Your spelling from Tuesday is due tomorrow.

THURSDAY, December 9: Discuss Chapter 9; Turn in Reader’s Journals. Do Map of the routes of Kit’s mother, Kit’s aunt Rachel, and Kit. HOMEWORK: Study Spelling for tomorrow’s test. Read Chapters 10-12 for Monday, write in Reader’s Journal, and review Chapters 9-12 for Quiz on Monday.

FRIDAY, December 10: Spelling Test. Turn in Reading Log. HOMEWORK: See Thursday’s assignment for Monday

MONDAY, December 13: Discuss Chapters 10-12; Quiz over Chapters 9-12. Turn in Reader’s Journals. HOMEWORK: Read Chapter 13 and 14 in WOBBP; write in Reader’s Journal. No spelling homework this week. No Reading Logs required.

TUESDAY, December 14: Discuss Chapters 13 and 14; Turn in Reader’s Journals. HOMEWORK: Read Chapters 15 and 16 in WOBBP; write in Reader’s Journal; go over Chapters 13-16 for quiz on Wednesday. Watch the United Streaming film on the Witch Hunts in Salem, Massachusetts. Discuss the novel and the relevant issues from the film.

WEDNESDAY, December 15: Discuss Chapters 15 and 16; Quiz over Chapters 13-16. Turn in Reader’s Journals to be checked. Go over directions for tomorrow’s centers. HOMEWORK: For Monday, January 3: Read Chapters 17-21 in WOBBP; write in Reader’s Journals. Review those chapters for last quiz over book on Tuesday, January 4, 2011.

THURSDAY, December 16: Students will predict what they think Christmas was like in the Puritan colonies. Go over Colonial Christmas packet which includes an article from the internet for each student to read. Play DVD of New England Christmas.

FRIDAY, December 17: Students will report in on their reading about the Puritan “celebration” of Christmas. Watch short United Streaming film on Colony of Connecticut, which mentions how the Puritans “celebrated” Christmas.

LITERATURE: Homework November 15-19

Dear Students,

Your Literature reading homework this week will be to read the book you have chosen to supplement our study of the early colonization of New England. Some of you have a book about Roanoke or Plymouth Colony; some of you have books about the Wampanoag's. You should be finished with this book by this Friday, November 19, and should be able to write a short summary of it in class to show me that you have finished it.

That will give you next weekend, the week of Thanksgiving, and Thanksgiving weekend to get your book report ready to present on the Monday after Thanksgiving holiday, November 29.

You can count this reading on your reading log every night. Reading logs are due on Friday, November 19. You will also have a spelling test over the following words:

SPELLING for Friday, November 19

1. culture
2. governor
3. descendant
4. heritage
5. resources
6. nationality
7. requirements
8. exchange
9. pumpkins
10. liberty

For Tuesday, you need to write each spelling word three times in modern manuscript. Due Tuesday morning.

For Wednesday, you need to use each spelling word correctly in a sentence that applies to our study of Plymouth colony. Due Wednesday morning.

For Thursday, you need to complete a handout in which you will match the correct word with its meaning. Due Thursday morning.

PLANS & PROCEDURES 4 PROSPEROUS PUPILS

Dear Students,

Last week, we had some changes in our spelling tests (no more make-up tests), and in turning in our reading logs (they are due on Fridays and will not be counted for a week if they are not turned in on time.)

This week, we are going to make some procedural changes that will help you prosper more as students. Our days should flow more smoothly, your grades should improve, and we should all be happier!

1. As St. Benedict taught, obedience is doing something with a good attitude the FIRST time one is asked—not eventually, when one gets around to it. So, I am going to be helping you remember to do that by rewarding you when you do! You will have an incentive chart on your desk. When you are following directions, on task, working, paying attention, participating in discussions, respecting me and your classmates, you will get stickers on that chart. Once you have 10 stickers, you will get a ticket to put in the jar. At the end of the week, I will pull several tickets out of the jar, and those people will get to choose a treasure from the treasure chest.

2. There will be a new place for you to keep your things—in the reading room. You will each have a peg for your jacket, lunchbox, and backpack. Your desk will also need to be a place where there is room for you to work. I appreciate you wanting to make your personal space colorful and individualized—but other than pencils, your desk needs to be clear.

3. I have had so much fun with you so far this year! You are fun to be with and make my days so happy and full of laughter. We will now have a special time on Fridays called Friday at the Improv. During this 15 minutes, you can get up in front of the class and tell your jokes (appropriate jokes only), sing your songs, and dance your dances! But during other times in the week, when we are studying, reading, or doing lessons, we’ll have to refrain from so much hilarity!

4. Snack time will be for 10 minutes only; then, the food will have to be put away, and we’ll have to continue with class.

5. Each of you will have a weekly job to help the class run more smoothly. Those jobs will include:
1. Line Leader—this person must make sure that the class in is line and ready to move CORRECTLY down halls and stairwells. When the students behind the leader get noisy, the line leader must stop and wait until the line is quiet. We have been “just a tad” too loud, and have been disrupting other classes.

2. Caboose—this person must make sure that everyone is out of the room, the lights have been turned off, and the door shut. On yoga days, this person will also be responsible for bring the bin of yoga mats down to the library, and bringing it back up to the room.

3. Time Keeper—this person will be in charge of making sure that the schedule for the day is correctly displayed in the new hanging chart that we will have. This person will also set the timer for each class so that we can make sure that we get to our other classes on time.

4. Passer-Outer—this person will pass out all papers for me, graded and ungraded; will pass out books, dictionaries, Bibles, and history and Bible cards. This person will also take up papers as students finish a test or an assignment and make sure that they are put in the correct place on my desk.

5. Writer—this person will write homework and class assignments on the board; write any directions necessary for completing classwork; and any reminders needed for the class for the week.

6. There will be spelling homework three nights a week, as well as reading assignments.

* Every Monday night, you will need to write each spelling word three times in modern manuscript. This will be due on Tuesday morning.

* Every Tuesday night, you will use each spelling word correctly in a sentence. That means you must understand the meaning of the word, even though it may not be a vocabulary word. This will be due on Wednesday morning.

* Every Wednesday night you will have a fill in the blank paper to complete that will have definitions that you must match to your spelling word. This paper will be due on Thursday morning.

We will also be practicing our spelling words during the school day. I want all of you to be able to make 100s in spelling!

I think that these new procedures will help us all feel less frazzled during the day— and less frazzled means happier!

LITERATURE: HOMEWORK 11/8-11/12

Ahoy, Mates!

We once again find ourselves on the high seas, this time sailing with the British aboard the Mayflower. This unit will include reading about the" re-mix" of the first voyage, as well as the Journal of William Bradford, parts of the Mayflower Compact, and a book of your choice that will add some historical fiction to the journey. For part of the week, your reading assignment will come from the short National Geographic book, Mayflower 1620: A New Look at a Pilgrim Voyage. Later in the week, I will be asking you to do some reading out of The History of US. I think that you will enjoy learning how the British interacted with their new surroundings, and comparing them to the Spanish in the New World.

I must mention two changes in my expectations of you as we near the middle of this school year. After Christmas vacation is over, you will begin the downward slope that will lead you into 6th or 7th grade. It is time that I "turned up the heat" just a tad. Lately, I have been giving make-up spelling tests when you don't do too well on the first test. I will no longer do that. You must study your words so that you can make a 100 (ok, maybe a 90) on the first try. That means you have to learn the words, pronounce them aloud, write them, practice them every day. I think several of you are depending on those make-up tests to improve your grade and not "getting with it" as soon as the words are posted. I promised you a make-up test over last week's words this Monday, but that will be the last one!

The second thing I need to mention that will be a little tougher is your filling out and turning in your reading logs on time, with parent signatures. Beginning this Friday, if you don't turn them in on time, I will not accept them for that week. I know all of you are reading--so write down what you are reading, and how long--you can use your reading log as a bookmark, and do it before you close the book each night. Several of you are three weeks behind on turning those in! If I don't have them by this Friday, November 12, those three weeks, and this 4th week, will not be counted. You can still make an A in Literature if you never turn in your reading log--but you would have to make a 100 on EVERYTHING else. That might mean several of you are headed for B's. B's are not bad grades at all--but each of you is totally capable of making A's.

Below is your homework for the week, along with this week's words for Friday's test.

Happy sailing!

TUESDAY, November 9--Discussion over pages 21-31 in Mayflower. You will also be able to choose your "other" book for this unit, and decide on how you would like to present your book report on that book--your choice, from several I will have available. HOMEWORK: Read pages 32-45 in Mayflower for Wednesday's class.

Other than your reading 30 minutes each night and filling in your Reading Logs, you won't have a book to read this week. LITERATURE: HOMEWORK 10/25-10/29

We are nearing the end of our journeys with Julian Escobar, and I must admit to being kind of sad. Just think: if J.K. Rowling had written these books, we could expect 4 or 5 more books, and all those movies! Your homework for the last chapters of The Amethyst Ring are below, with your spelling and vocabulary test for Friday, October 29. We will be concentrating on the Inca this week--their legends and history, and their encounters with the Spanish conquistadores, Francisco Pizarro and his brother, Hernan de Soto.

The following week, November 1-5, will be a week of celebration (and testing) that will end our study of the Spanish explorers and the Americans they conquered. !Tendremos un banquete de la cena con maya auténtico, con azteca, y con platos de inca que serán muy deliciosos! You'll be helping with the celebration, so be ready to have some fun!

Be sure that you are reading at least 30 minutes every night and logging these minutes in your Reading Log. You will have to know and recognize the definitions for the words below
in order to take your spelling test, so don't ignore the vocabulary.

Your other assignments are below, along with your Spelling and Vocabulary words. This week in History, we will continue to study the Spanish explorers and their "doings" in the New World. UPDATES for Lit and History

Just a reminder--on Tuesday of this week, I assigned you to read the first 10 chapters of The Amethyst Ring (pages 357-418) by Tuesday of next week, October 19. If you haven't started yet, and begin tonight, you can read 2 chapters each day (including the weekend) and be done without any stress! Read carefully--there will be a reading quiz over the basic plot next Tuesday during Literature.

Since so many of you did really well on your "Practice Test" in History, I wasn't sure you would choose to re-take it, and didn't have a new test made out for today. I'll give the re-test on Monday, October 18 during History time for those of you who would like to take it again. I'm so proud of all of you for how much you've learned so far this year! Study those maps and you'll all do REALLY well!

Royal Volunteers Needed for Canterbury Faire

BAKE SALE
We are asking for everyone to donate one large item (such as a cake, pie, or bread) and one batch of small items individually wrapped (such as cookies, brownies, rice krispy treats).
• Label everything with tags or printed labels from your computer, be sure to mention if the item contains nuts. Don’t worry about pricing, we will handle that.
• Presentation is everything! Large items sell much faster if they look great. Check the dollar store for Fall or Halloween plates to display your creation.
• Individual items don’t need to be wrapped as fancy, most of these will be sold and eaten at lunchtime. These will be priced at 50 cents each, so package accordingly (one brownie per bag, two cookies per bag, etc.).
• Delivery times: Friday, October 22 before 4pm at the front of the school, or Saturday October 23 before 10am at our table by the Parish Hall.

CLASS BOOTHS
Sign up for a time to help at your classroom booth. Each class has a booth and parents need to sign up for 30 minute time slots. If you are unable to go into your child's class and sign up, send your teacher an email and let her know when you can help.

RAFFLE
Ready for a fall getaway? The Canterbury Faire committee is so excited to announce a raffle for a weekend getaway to Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine. It is a kid's dream and fun for parents, too! Tickets for the raffle are available in the office. Tickets are $10 per ticket or 3 tickets for $20.
A special thank you to our generous raffle sponsor Sherri and Graves Erskine, Geico Local Office serving the Killeen/Temple area.

Questions? Don't know what you can do to help? Contact Holly Steele, Canterbury Faire Chairperson. Thanks everyone for supporting this Parents Plus fundraiser!!

LITERATURE: HOMEWORK 10/12-15

LITERATURE HOMEWORK: For Week of Tuesday, October 12-Friday, October 15

READING:

*You will need to read your Aztec legend and write a summary of its main points by Friday. You will tell your tale to the class without reading from your legend. You may use your summary.

*You will color your picture from Aztec primary sources by Friday, and use it as an illustration of your story. The god or goddess in the story matches your picture.

*When you choose your colors, refer to the sheet in your packet that shows the stones and gems from Aztec Moon, and use these colors as your color palette. These would have been the same colors and stones that the original Aztecs would have used to paint or carve their art!

*Be sure and read at home for 30 minutes every night. Your Reading Log will still be due on Friday, October 15.You don’t need to read The Amethyst Ring yet, but can read a library book. We’ll start The Amethyst Ring on Thursday night, October 14.

*There will be NO spelling or vocabulary test on Friday, October 15.

*Instead, spend the weekend and week studying for your HISTORY test. I will give you a practice test on Tuesday, and the real test on Thursday.

LITERATURE: HOMEWORK 10/4-10/8

It was a blessing to see you at Christ Episcopal Church today, and I was really proud that the whole 5th/6th grade class was there! Your singing was beautiful, and it was really special to watch you worship with your families, and to be part of that worship with you.

I wanted to remind you in this post that THERE ARE NO NEW WORDS for spelling and vocabulary this week. I will give a re-test over last week's words (see last week's blog post) for those who might want to raise your grade.

There are reading assignments, though, and if you stay up on the reading, we will be finished with The Feathered Serpent and on to the last book of the trilogy, The Amethyst Ring by next weekend. In class on Monday, I'll give you the literature guide for this week, but the information can also be found below.

5th/6th Grade FIELD TRIP

Dear Parents and Students,

The Kimbell Art Museum in Ft. Worth has a special exhibit of Mayan Artifacts! We would like to take the 5th and 6th grade students there on Wednesday, October 13. We will need to leave the school at 7:30, so please plan on getting your child here early that day--we will leave from the front of the building. Mrs. Horner and Mrs. Alwine will be driving, and we will have Ms. Evans with us. We plan on leaving Ft. Worth by 1:30 s0 as to be able to arrive back at school by 4:00. Please plan on picking your child up at 4: 00 that day. They will be in the library with the extended day students, so you will need to come in and get them.

Even though this is a Chapel Day, please have your child wear his or her regular-day school uniform. They will need to bring a sack lunch with a drink or two, and one snack for the afternoon. We will furnish a morning snack. There will be no need for any money unless you would like your child to be able to shop at the Kimbell Gift Shop.

We plan on having the students go first to the Maya Exhibit, where they will look and listen and even draw--they will need to bring a sketchbook. Then, after we eat a picnic lunch on the grounds, we will go back in to view several special pieces in the Permanent Collection. Mrs. Horner and Ms. Evans will discuss these paintings with the students. To check out the Mayan exhibit, click here.

This promises to be a fun and exciting day, and we are looking forward to being at the Museum. Please fill out and sign the permisison slip found at the site below. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Alwine or Mrs. Horner.

Thanks!

Jill Horner

COMPUTER

Today in computer class we reviewed the many uses of Excel. We started our ongoing project for the Yum Yum Candy Factory. We created forms in Excel that we will use to help represent surveys that are being done. The kids experienced many of the nervous aspects of computers today. They learned to be calm and overcome them. It so much easier to mess up in a test environment instead of the night before it’s due.

Christ Church School Sunday :: October 3

We hope you make plans to join all of us for Christ Church School Sunday this Sunday, October 3.

CCS is the primary ministry of Christ Church and the parishoners always appreciate seeing "their" students. At the 11 a.m. service the church will offer prayers for the school and will recognize the faculty, staff, school board, but most importantly our students. Upper School students will also sing.

Following we will have cake and fellowship in the Parish Hall. It is a lovely morning and we hope you will be there.

Students are encouraged to wear their Chapel uniforms.
