Bible: May 20-24

Memory Verse:
"While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him; but Jesus said to him, "Judas, is it with a kiss that you are betraying the Son of Man?"
Luke 22:47-48

This week we will be discussing Jesus betrayal and arrest, leading us into the crucifixion. In class we harmonized this betrayal from three Gospels; Mark, Luke and John. We began discussions of Jesus referral to himself as "I Am." Please look back at your notes from class here: CLICK ME

The “I AM” harkens back to God’s reference to himself as the Great I AM in the old testament. We discussed specifically the passage of Moses and the burning bush from Exodus 3.

Jesus said ‘I am’ on seven occasions.  Each ‘I am’ is a description Jesus gave of Himself and is recorded in John’s Gospel.  The Seven ‘I am’ sayings help us better understand the divinity of Jesus Christ.

1.I am the bread of life, he who comes to me shall not hunger. John 6:35
2. I am the light of the world, he who follows me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life. John 8:12
3.  “I am the gate; if anyone enters through Me, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.” John 10:9
4. “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for His sheep.” John 10:11
5. “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies.” John 11:25
6. “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me.” John 14:6
7.  “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.” John 15:1

The divinity of Jesus Christ is further illustrated in John 8:58.  Jesus said,  “Truly, Truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am”, which means that Jesus existed before His human life on earth.

LIT & HISTORY for May 20-24

Howdy, Pardners!

Sorry to be getting this out so late this weekend--I almost forgot I needed to do it!  This week is going to be a week to get things finished and the loose ends "tied up."

When I pick you up each morning, Monday-Thursday, we will go straight to the computer lab so that you can work on your three PowerPoint slides for your ABCs of Johnny Tremain.  I will be giving you a rubric tomorrow with the expectations of what should be on each slide.  BRING YOUR OWN THUMB DRIVES from home if you have one.  That way, when your slides are completed and saved on your thumb drive, I can take those and compile one PPt from the 26 slides.

We will spend half of our time in the computer lab each day, and the other half upstairs continuing to watch the United Streaming series on The Revolutionary War.  You have your Causes of the Revolution Test on Tuesday.  Remember that you must also be able to recite the opening to the Declaration of Independence on Tuesday--you choose how much you want to memorize based on the grade you want to receive. Remember that if you want some "easy" extra credit, you need to find an article about the present day Tea Party and the illegal targeting of them by the IRS that has been in the news lately, and bring it in!

We have our last spelling test on Friday, and you must turn in your last reading log on Friday, too!  Since you have no reading assignments this week, you need to be reading 30 minutes each night from a book of your choice!

This week, we have a few special events:

Tuesday night is your Music Concert.  You will need to be in the Music Room by 6:15.  Miss Boyd writes
"The kids need to wear a white shirt/blouse (no print on them please) and khaki bottoms (pants, shorts, and skirts). I'm not going to be picky about shoes this concert because some of them have to get down on the floor when they play boom whackers."

On Friday, the Zoo Man will come with his "pets" at 10:30.  That is also the day that we begin our Johnny Tremain book reports, and Teach the Teacher lessons with our first three students.  Please  link to the document below that will tell you about this schedule.  You will also get a copy in class tomorrow.

Your spelling words for your last test are below.  Please study!  Grades have definitely dropped on spelling tests since I began giving them (at your request) on Fridays.

Have a nice, restful Sunday!

Bible: April 8-12

I spoke with you all in class about us catching the fast train in our study of the Gospels so that we might end with Jesus Ascension by the end of this school year. Please be sure to come to class on time, even on special days such as Park Days or Field Trip days. We still have bible class on those mornings.

Sadly, we are going to have to skip some of the miracles and other events along the way. I want to encourage you to read the introductions on our reading cards and scriptures to the lessons we are going to have to skip over. I could spend a whole year on Jesus miracles, but we have our whole lives to read God's Word so don't let me stop you from seeking knowledge in the word on your own time!

  • That being said, we are going to finish up Jesus Sermon on the Mount this coming Monday by going over the scriptures and finding how Jesus came to explain and fulfill the law, not to destroy it. Go back and review our notes we took on Friday into our prayer journals.

  • Friday we will begin Jesus sending his Apostles out two by two. Come prepared with your pencils, bibles, and review who these 12 Apostles were. Ask someone if they know the difference between an Apostle and a Disciple.

This week, you will be studying the rest of the 13 Colonies:  the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies.  We will have a short unit on Slavery as it applied to agriculture and economics in these colonies.

You will need to be working on your Texas Legend PowerPoint at school and at home, if necessary.  It is due this Friday.  Friday is also Grandparent's Day, and after the concert, please invite your Grandparents up to the room to see your PowerPoint presentations of your Legends!  I'm sure they'll enjoy your stories!

You have a spelling test this Monday, as well as a quiz over Chapters 4-6 from The Light in the Forest.

Your new spelling and vocabulary words for next week's test (Monday, April 15) are below.  So are links to your weekly assignment chart and the few new papers I will be handing out this week.

I hope you have a blessed Sunday, and I'll see you tomorrow!

Tin Can Math

Our end of year project will consist of creating a Volume Tin Man and/or Woman.  This will all be done in class and we will begin working on these in May.  Here are some sample tin men.
The tin man for the garden. A recycled scarecrow?!
Mrs. Lin has been collecting large cans for me and I'm sure we will have enough of those.  What I need is smaller cans like tomato paste, tuna, sardines, etc.  The students will figure the volume, measurement and capacity of their final work.

Literature & History Week of April 2-5

Happy Easter, Students!

First, I'd like to thank you for being so well behaved and attentive on our field trip to the Bob Bullock Museum.  You are a delight to be with!  I hope you had as much fun as I did!

I hope you are enjoying this beautiful celebration of the Resurrection of Our Lord, Jesus!  You have one more day off (unless you are in Extended Care on Monday), so enjoy yourselves.  It's our last holiday until May 27th.  Wow!  That's nine weeks from now, and school will almost be over.

This week, we will be studying for our History Test over the Early British Colonies of Roanoke, Jamestown, Plymouth, Salem, and Massachusetts Bay--and there is so much to go over that I have postponed the test from this Tuesday until Friday, April 5.  You still ought to be studying those colonies we have already reviewed.   You can access your study guide here if you have lost it.

We will begin a short study of the 13 American Colonies this week, and will start with the New England and Middle Colonies.  You will be doing some group research, filling out charts, and watching films that will help summarize the differences in these regions.

We will also begin a new historical novel this week, and it's one of my favorites--The Light in the Forest.  You won't have a book report or project with this book, but will have to keep track of the geography (which is a very important "character,") as well as the British, American Colonists, and Native Americans who are important characters, too.

You have a Spelling Test Monday; you will have a new Reading Log to fill out for this Friday; and you will continue to work on your Texas Legend writing and PowerPoint.  Don't forget to bring a flash drive to school so that you can save your work from the computer lab.  The rough  draft of your legend is due this Wednesday, and  you'll turn it in on your flash drive.

This Friday morning, you are in for a very special concert!  Mrs. Sullivant has a very famous cousin, David Holt, who is a folk song and instrumental performer of American folk music, and an amazing storyteller.  He has put out CDs,  has even won Grammy's, and he'll be at CCS to sing and perform for us!  You can link to his website here!
